Observation:
I came across this picture, which is of a statue of Simon Bolivar, when doing my research last week. The first statue was sculpted by R. De Las Cora and placed in Central Park in 1891, near West 83rd Street. This hill in which it was placed on was given the name "Bolivar Hill". It was later removed because many thought that it did not "live up to its expextations". A sculptor by the name of Sally James Farnham created the statue which has currently replaced the old one. This piece was created out of bronze and was set-up on April 19, 1921.
Interpretation:
Simon Bolivar is known as El Liberator, due to his successful victories in freeing the countries of Haiti, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Mexico, Columbia. The statue portrays him as an influential and powerful military man. He is dressed in full uniform riding on a horse, which has one hoof in the air, this also gives the piece of artwork a sense of power and victory.
Judgement:
Thie significance of this statue standing in New York city is that shows a sense of pride for the Latin American culture and gives Americans awaremess of their culture. This art also serves as a representation of North, South, & Central America, by uniting them together.
Questioning:
I found it interesting that this statue was placed in Central Park, never having been there before it makes me wonder what other types of statues or artwork are found there? And what there significance is as well.
